Today I'm going to talk about the Hofstede model, that is a theory that was created in 1980 by Geert Hofstede. In the official page of Hofstege insight we can found this definition of the model:
The Hofstede model of national culture consists of six dimensions. The cultural dimensions represent independent preferences for one state of affairs over another that distinguish countries (rather than individuals) from each other.
The country scores on the dimensions are relative, in that we are all human and simultaneously we are all unique. In other words, culture can only be used meaningfully by comparison. The model consists of the following dimensions:
Power Distance Index (PDI)
Individualism Vs Collectivism (IDV)
Masculinity Vs Femininity (MAS)
Uncertainty avoidance index (UAI)
Long term Orientations Vs Short term normative orientation (LTO)
Indulgence Vs Restraint (IVR)
We can see the results of the comparison between Colombia and Ireland, obteins of: https://www.hofstede-insights.com/
In Blue Colombia
In Purple Ireland
In this page we can found a tool for the comparison between countries and how the model its applies to there.
Between Ireland and Colombia we can found a lot of differences starting for the role gender that is more present in power distance in Colombia that have more gender gap and inequiality than ireland while this country have more an masculine image.
In the case of the masculinity both of the countries have an high score and that is for all the traditions that are present and are changing little by little in the societies. But in the category of individualism in Ireland they have an high score because the people is worried attaining their own goals, not for the results that they can achieve like a group. Whereas in Colombia it is more common to see how people are concerned about the well-being and achievement of others, thinking collectively.
If we see the comparison in the Uncertainly Unknow Colombia have an score high because in this country the people is more comfortable with their well-being and don't handle well. But in Ireland the people its more open to the Unknow and for this reason the score that they have in the category of indulgence is more high although in both countries the scores are high.
In conclusion, the both countries have a lot of things in common starting with the traditions that we can found in there but if we see the inequality in the area of power skewed by gender roles that are more present in Colombia than in Ireland.
